Position: Senior Lecturer, University of Texas at Arlington

Bio

Bhanu Jain is a senior lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington. She received her PhD Degree in August 2021 from The University of Texas at Arlington (Advisors: Dr. R. Elmasri and Dr. M. Huber). She received her Master’s degree in CSE from The University of Texas at Arlington and her Bachelor’s degree in CSE from Institute of Engineering and Technology, Lucknow University, India.

She teaches Machine Learning, Algorithms, Databases, and Programming languages at UTA and conducts research in Machine Learning. She has designed many databases.

Her research interests lie in increasing accuracy and mitigating bias in machine learning based predictions. She has developed techniques to improve fairness and prediction accuracy in recidivism and personal income domains. She is interested in continuing to increase the depth and application of this work in other domains – particularly medical diagnosis where race, gender, age, weight etc. based discrimination abound and medical images are involved in addition to quantitative datasets. She is interested in the development of a better understanding of bias and fairness concepts in AI decision making as well as techniques to automatically reduce bias and improve fairness in automatic decision making. Her work can be applied in loan application acceptance, dating, hiring, granting parole, insurance etc.  domainsx

Her strong research interest also lies in the sustainable waste management domain where she would like to apply her heretofore developed skills in CSE in general and machine learning in particular.
