Bio

Dr. Cheng is an assistant professor in Computer Science at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her research interests are broadly in data mining and machine learning, focusing on socially responsible AI, causal machine learning, and AI for social good. Over the past few years, she has focused on bridging ethical AI principles (e.g., fairness) and responsible practice by developing algorithmic solutions for socially responsible AI using both statistical and causal methods. Her research has been applied to societally-relevant problems in areas that require interdisciplinary approaches such as cyberbullying and disinformation detection, disaster response in social media, meta-analysis in medical research, and urban computing, among others. She authors two books: “Causal Inference and Machine Learning (Chinese)” and “Socially Responsible AI: Theories and Practices”.
