Stavros Sintos

Bio
Dr. Sintos is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). His research interests lie in the intersection of data management and theory spanning various areas such as approximate query processing, data summaries/sketches, algorithmic fairness, clustering, and fact-checking. As a Ph.D. student at Duke University, he started doing research in computational geometry. He quickly realized how technical ideas and notions from optimization can be used to design efficient and practical algorithms in databases. Hence, an important aspect of his research has been on combining geometric optimization with query processing designing efficient data structures and database systems to accelerate various queries. In addition to research, he is passionate about teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. During the summer of 2019, while he was a Ph.D. student, he was mentoring five undergraduate students who were designing a scalable “pop-up” fact-checking system as part of the Data+ Summer Research Program. As a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Chicago, he was working and advising multiple Ph.D. students on data management projects. Finally, from the very first semester working as an assistant professor at UIC, he has started advising a graduate student on his thesis on database theory.
